The Sanborn County 4-H Building in Forestburg has served the area well for many years, supporting 4-H as well as many community events.  We are in exciting times as both growth in 4-H and needs from the school and community are demanding more space for activities.

We are pleased to announce that plans are underway to expand the 4-H building.  The Sanborn County 4-H program has grown from about 30 members in 2004 to 160 members today.  Of that total, we have 90 4-H members in the Shooting Sports program, an increase from 15 in 2008.  Shooting Sports offers practice every week on Sunday and Tuesday from January to April, and this activity pushes the building capacity to its seams.  As we have explored ways to support and expand our annual Achievement Days and other 4-H activities, we also find the need for more space.

The building is used for community and school activities throughout the year including meetings and workshops, graduation receptions, showers, family reunions and get-togethers, funerals and the Forestburg alumni reunion.  As we have visited with Sanborn Central and Woonsocket Schools, we find that there is a need for additional building space for school plays, FFA activities, marching band practice, cheerleading practice, and much more that could take pressure off the school gym and support various activities.  We see potential for the building to be used for larger social events with increased space.

We are planning to double the size of the existing 100’x60’ Building with an addition to the north side.  It will provide mostly open space, but also add storage off the kitchen and add a family/handicap-accessible restroom.  Groundbreaking is planned for May 2023.

A major step in this process is of course fundraising with a total goal of $300,000.  We have received a $100,000 commitment from the Sanborn County Commissioners. To date we have raised and/or received commitments for an additional $58,000 of this amount for a total of $158,000 of goal. We intend to raise the remainder through donations, fundraising and grants. Donor recognition levels range from a one-time gift of $500 to $15,000, as well as on option for a recurring donation that gives you signage in the building addition. This brochure will provide a rough draft of the planned addition, donor level opportunities and information on the need for the addition.

LIBRARY

The Month of March is Women in History Month.  So instead of the March Madness Book Bracket, I will be displaying important Women in History bios. Each week I will display 4 to 6 different women.  I do have the activities that go with the display if anyone is interested in using them in the classroom.

The Friends of the Library cookbooks are out. The cost is $10 per book.  They make great Christmas gifts too.

We have a monthly book club for adults. If you are interested in joining, please contact Bev Dunn at Woonsocket.library@k12.sd.us of 605-796-1412.

Any student at home can do an AR test by contacting Mrs. Dunn and setting up a time to do one over the phone. You can test of email her at 605-461-8905 or bev.dunn@k12.sd.us.

A friendly reminder that you must put on hand sanitizer when entering the library. Thank you.

Just a reminder that you can also get your AR points by doing a book report. Please use the following form. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Dunn.

COMMUNITY

CommunityWoonsocket Wi-Fi

The Woonsocket Community and Events Center has expanded its central role in connecting community residents and visitors. Santel Communications recently installed a Public Wi-Fi system that provides free Wi-Fi.

According to Woonsocket Schools Superintendent, Dr. Rod Weber, “The school’s remote and eLearning platforms require the student’s reliable access to the Internet. It is important for the school to work with families and community to provide connectivity they need to continue learning through varied pandemic conditions and restrictions. Santel approached the school on ways to help and within a short amount of time, free public Wi-Fi was implemented.”

The community center now has Wi-Fi coverage inside and outside the building. The students and public are invited to use and access Internet for their needs. General Manager Ryan Thompson of Santel states, “Our enhanced Wi-Fi systems allow expanded coverage in an area commonly used by the community for many different events and gatherings. If more stringent social distancing is required, we felt it was important to offer students and residents outdoor ‘drive up’ Internet as well. Drive up, park, connect. Easy, safe and convenient.”

Internet-connected device users should select the community center Wi-Fi access point on their device and with no password required the system allows up to a 2-hour session of free Wi-Fi internet.

To add anything to the announcements, please contact luci.grassel@k12.sd.us
